VDI 3922: Professional
Energy Data Management

VDI 3922 — published by the Association of German Engineers (VDI) — is the German standard for energy data acquisition and management in industry and commerce. It defines how measurement data must be structured, stored, and evaluated to be usable for energy management and certification.

What is VDI 3922?

VDI 3922 is a guideline from the Association of German Engineers (VDI) for Energy Data Management (EDM) in industry and commerce. It emerged from the practical need to consolidate energy data from diverse sources — meters, sensors, SCADA, ERP systems — in a structured and quality-assured manner.

The guideline specifies the requirements placed on an EDM system: from data acquisition and quality assurance through to archiving and analysis. It is not a certification standard, but is the de facto reference in German industry.

Compliance with VDI 3922 creates the technical foundation for ISO 50001, DIN EN 16247, and valid EnPI calculations in accordance with ISO 50006.

What VDI 3922 Specifically Requires

Completeness of Acquisition

All relevant energy sources and consumption points must be systematically recorded. Gaps in the metering concept must be documented and justified.

Data Quality & Validation

Incoming data is checked for plausibility, completeness, and consistency. Erroneous or missing values are identified and handled accordingly.

Granularity & Resolution

Temporal resolution and metering depth must be appropriate to the intended purpose — from 15-minute intervals for load profile analysis to annual values for reporting.

Long-Term Archiving

Energy data must be archived in a tamper-proof manner over the long term — for trend analysis, audits, and multi-year comparisons.

Interfaces & Integration

The EDM system must provide open interfaces for integrating metering equipment, ERP and MES systems, and reporting tools.

Analysis & Reporting

Aggregation, normalisation, and analysis of energy data for management, the energy team, and external auditors — automated and reproducible.

Alligator as a VDI 3922-Compliant EDM System

The Alligator platform was designed from the ground up as a professional energy data management system. All VDI 3922 requirements are reflected in its architecture.

Universal Connectivity
OPC-UA, Modbus, M-Bus, BACnet, KNX, DLMS, MQTT — we connect to any metering equipment you have. No replacement, no retrofitting required.
Automatic Data Validation
Every incoming data point is checked for plausibility. Outliers, sudden spikes, and gaps are automatically flagged and can be addressed individually.
Time-Series-Optimised Database
Architecture optimised for high-frequency energy data. Millions of measurement points, fast queries, tamper-proof long-term archiving — GDPR-compliant, hosted in Germany.
Open API & ERP Integration
REST API for all data points. Bidirectional integration with SAP, MES systems, and BI tools (Power BI, Grafana). No data silo effects.
