ISO 50001, DIN EN 16247 & more –
everything you need to know

Energy management standards can be complex. This overview explains which standards are relevant to your organisation, what they require, and how software can drastically simplify compliance.

Which standard applies to whom?

ISO 50001

Energy Management System (EnMS)

ISO 50001 is the world's leading standard for energy management systems. It describes how organisations build and maintain a continual improvement process for their energy consumption – following the PDCA cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Act).

ISO 50001 certification is the basis for energy and electricity tax relief (§ 55 EnergieStG, § 10 StromStG) and BAFA (German federal subsidy) funding.

Core requirements:

  • Define energy policy and objectives
  • Identify Significant Energy Users (SEUs)
  • Define and track Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs)
  • Document baseline and energy measurement
  • Conduct management reviews

DIN EN 16247

Energy Audit

DIN EN 16247 defines the requirements for energy audits – systematic analyses of energy consumption in buildings, industrial facilities and transport. For non-SME companies in Germany, the energy audit under EDL-G is mandatory.

Unlike ISO 50001, an energy audit is a periodic snapshot, not a permanent management system.

Who this applies to:

  • Non-SMEs (> 250 employees or > €50m turnover)
  • Mandatory audit every 4 years under EDL-G
  • SMEs eligible on a voluntary basis for subsidies
  • Alternative: ISO 50001 certification

FAQ: ISO 50001 & Standards

How much does ISO 50001 certification cost?

Certification costs depend on company size and complexity. Typical one-off costs are €5,000–€20,000 for consulting, implementation and initial certification. BAFA (German federal subsidy) funding (25–45%) can refinance a significant portion of these costs.

How long does it take to implement an EnMS to ISO 50001?

With the right software and expert guidance, implementation typically takes 3–9 months through to initial certification. The prerequisite is structured capture of all energy data and processes.

Can software automatically prepare an ISO 50001 certification?

Not automatically – but Alligator Analytica drastically reduces the effort involved. Automated Energy Performance Indicator (EnPI) capture, baselining, documentation and reporting cover a large proportion of ISO 50001 requirements and prepare you specifically for the audit.

What tax benefits does ISO 50001 bring?

Companies with ISO 50001 certification can apply for relief under § 55 EnergieStG (energy tax) and § 10 StromStG (electricity tax). For high-energy-consuming organisations, these reliefs can be substantial.
